What was the significance of the 1876 election?

The US presidential election in 1876 was held on November 7, 1876.

The election was contested between Republican Rutherford Hayes and Democrat Samuel Tilden, where Hayes won the election by an electoral margin and the election became one of the most disputed in American history.

When the votes were counted, it was unclear who would win the electoral majority that depended on the unclear results in Louisiana, South Carolina and Florida, which, despite being granted voting rights in the electoral college, were still under federal occupation, which Democrats abused to bram Republican majority (with victory in either state, Tilden had won the election). The uncertainty about the outcome in these states came to hit the United States for almost four months. The disagreements included, among other things, the voting rights of blacks, as blacks supported Hayes and Republicans.

The resulting situation would eventually be resolved by a congressional committee, which voted for the party lines. Hayes' line won by eight votes to seven, and then on March 2, 1877, the Electoral Assembly was able to elect Hayes by 185 votes to 184, with great guarantees for the South, most significantly the end of the occupation and thus the reconstruction period. Two days later, Hayes was installed as president.
