In Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the Basic Needs or Physiological Needs include food, water, and shelter. This is the lowest level in this hierarchy.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs describes the things that motivate a person and his or her behavior and ranks them by level in a pyramid. The levels include the following (1 being the lowest level and 5 the highest):

1. Basic Needs - air, food, water, sleep, clothing, reproduction

2. Safety Needs - personal and financial security, property, health

3. Love and Belonging - relationships, intimacy, sense of connection, family

4. Esteem Needs - accomplishment, prestige, respect, recognition, strength, freedom

5. Self- Actualization - the desire the be the best version of the self possible

According to Maslow, humans have the natural desire for self-actualization, the highest level in his pyramid. However, in order to achieve this, lower level needs must first be met. The lower levels begin with the basic needs and as one goes up the pyramid the needs become more complex. From basic physiological ones, the needs become psychological and social. Maslow called the highest level as the growth needs - the desire to grow as a person. When these needs are unmet, problems and tensions arise.

Some criticisms about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs are:

The physiological or basic needs are those needs that are essential for an individual’s survival. If physiological or basic needs are not satisfied then the human body doesn’t function optimally. These needs are important than any other need, all other needs become secondary until the individual’s these needs are met. Example; food, shelter, cloth, sex, sleep.

MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Maslow states that an individual is motivated to achieve some needs. The most basic need of a human being is for survival, and that is the first thing that motivates the behavior of an individual. The five-stage model includes:

1. Physiological needs- these are survival or basic needs. Example- food, shelter, cloth, sleep, sex.

2. Safety needs- Protection from security, order, law, freedom from fear, elements.

3. Belongingness and love needs- Friendship, acceptance, intimacy, giving and receiving, affiliating.

4. Esteem needs- Need for reputation or respect which is important for adolescents.

5. Self-actualization needs- seeking personal growth, realizing personal potential and self-fulfillment.
