A Boat operator needs to approach the dock at a steep angle within 40 to 45 degrees, and then swing boat quickly. Firstly, secure the bow lines and use the gear to reverse until the stern swings in.

Before approaching a duck, a boat operator needs to reduce its speed and make use of the reverse gear to stop. Then the operator should prepare for docking by preparing for fenders on the docking side and prepare both the sterns and bow lines.  

Now, you will have to take note of surrounding and locations.  It is important to observe the intensity of the wind and the direction; you should also observe how the boat drifts in water so that it can maneuver properly. For safety, it is always advisable for boater to approach the duck into the wind current. As said earlier, this gives more control.  

Docking with the wind at your back

In case the wind is pushing you towards the duck, you must approach at a shallow angle. You must approach the dock within 10-20 degrees. Shift into neutral once you are close and gently use the wind to shift your boat into the dock. You can use the gear to change position but allow the wind to shift your boat into place, and then you can now secure the bows and stern lines.
