An elevator cable breaks when a 925-kg elevator is 28.5 m above the top of a huge spring Ak = 8.00 * 104 NmB at the bottom of the shaft. Calculate (a) the work done by gravity on the elevator before it hits the spring; (b) the speed of the elevator just before striking the spring; (c) the amount the spring compresses (note that here work is done by both the spring and gravity).

Air initially at 0.75 bar, 1000 k, and occupying a volume of 0.12 m^3 undergoes two processes. process 1-2: the air is compressed isothermally until the volume is halved. process 2-3: the air undergoes a constant pressure process until the volume is halved again. assume ideal gas behavior. a) determine the mass of the air, in kg. b) the work and the heat transfer for each of the two processes, in kj. (100 kj = 1 bar . m^3)

Aspring is used to stop a 50-kg package which is moving down a 20º incline. the spring has a constant k = 30 kn/m and is held by cables so that it is initially compressed 50 mm. knowing that the velocity of the package is 2 m/s when it is 8 m from the spring and neglecting friction, determine the maximum additional deformation of the spring in bringing the package to rest.
