On Sunday, September 8, 1935, United States Senator Huey Long was mortally wounded at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge. According to the most widely accepted version of events, Weiss then shot Long in the chest. Long's bodyguards shot Weiss, killing him instantly.

Long was struck in the torso. Long's bodyguards, nicknamed the "Cossacks" or "skullcrushers", responded by firing at Weiss with their own pistols, killing him; an autopsy found that Weiss had been shot more than 69 times by Long's bodyguards.
