The Ottoman Empire's official religion was Islam and the prophet Mohammed had stated that Constantinople would be conquered by Muslims to become a Muslim city. This further strengthened their religious influence considering that the Ottoman Empire was openly opposed to Judaism and Christianity. While they were generally tolerant, they promoted conversion and creating an officially Muslim city would cement their religious power and influence.
