President Franklin D. Roosevelt experienced first hand the Great Depression that began in 1930. Still reeling from severe economic hardship, high unemployment, and sky-rocketing inflation, Roosevelt was reluctant to begin a massive military (and economic) buildup in the late 1930’s that culminated in World War 2 in Europe. It was only on December 7, 1941 with the surprise attack of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that he reluctantly joined WW2, at great economic cost. Hope that helps!
