Yesterday we examined how James Comey uses the 3 rhetorical appeals in his response to Tim Cook's "Message to Our Customers." Today you will begin writing an analysis of his letter. Your analysis will consist of TWO paragraphs. Your FIRST paragraph will be short: you will summarize Comey's letter (30-50 words). In this summary, explain what is his purpose in this letter (what is he trying to accomplish), and what is his main point. Please follow the guidelines for summary writing that we discussed last week. In your SECOND paragraph, you will analyze how Comey uses 1 of the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, or logos--your choice) . You will write a body-paragraph style response similar to the one I wrote for Snyder v Phelps (see below). In your response, you should do the following: 1. Begin by identifying a strategy that Comey is using to persuade his audience and explain how this strategy might help persuade his audience. 2. Include at least two quotes from Comey's letter, and explain how, in these quotes, he is either building his credibility (ethos) or appealing to our sense of reason (logos) or our emotions/values (logos).
