One example of a metaphor that is continued throughout the whole poem compares voices to the speakers doubts about leaving, "though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice." Then, as the journey progresses, the speakers doubts subside, as do the voices., "there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own." This journey of voices allows the reader to feel more connected with the poem than if the poet had simply stated that the speaker had doubts."
