The Interview Hale paused on the street corner and looked up at the night sky. The light from street lamps and buildings was quite different from the gentle twinkle of stars he was used to seeing in the skies above his hometown. It was hard getting used to living in LA. Since arriving, Hale had been searching for a job, but his first few interviews did not go well.

With money supplies dwindling, Hale decided to try for a position as a receiving clerk at a warehouse. At the warehouse he found a small office that buzzed with ringing phones, a running fax and a CB that crackled vague dialogue. In the middle of all of the commotion, a large man hunched over his desk and yelled orders into the phone.

"What do you mean the truck won't arrive until Tuesday?" He barked into the phone. "I want you to get the cardboard in here by 3 a. m. on Saturday, or we don't want to see your trucks at all!"

He hung up the phone, stared at it for a moment and then swung his chair around to face Hale. "I'm Jack Bolt, and you must be the guy who called about our job opening," he said, gruffly. "Things are a little tense here because we don't have a receiving clerk, but maybe you can solve that problem."

Hale wasn't sure what to think about this cranky man who was obviously under a lot of pressure and in need of help. He explained his work history, his move to the city and his goals for finding a job.

"We put in long days here and you obviously need training," Jack said, in the same rough voice he used to give orders over the phone.

Was he telling him these things to let him know he wanted him to work there or that he was wrong for the job? It was hard for Hale to understand what Jack meant. Hale wasn't sure how the interview went until he received a call asking him whether he could start working at the warehouse on Monday.
