In the book to kill a mockingbird, What is a “hot steam”?

According to Jem "Hot Steam" is a soul who has not been able to make its way to heaven. Instead it lurks about the earth and is what we may compare to a ghost.

can you add the article

onto a large boat, and mark the water level that the boat sinks to. then, take the elephant out and put a bunch of marked weights onto the boat until it reaches the same water level. add up the masses of the weights to get the weight of the elephant.
