Now, listen to the recorded instructions again, and refer to the transcript. Then, analyze how the syntax and diction of the instructions develop the tone, mood, and voice by answering the questions in the following three tables. (Note: you may need to listen to and read the transcript of the instructions several times.) THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT
Creating a Straw Rocket
Today, you will be creating a straw rocket with materials from around the classroom. Before you begin, collect the following materials: paper, a sharpened pencil, scissors, tape, and a straw. If you do not have straw available, find any other tube the size of a straw. If your teacher allows, you can deconstruct a pen and use the tube from it. Be sure that you also download and print the template of the rocket.

Now, let’s begin!

First, carefully cut out the rectangle from the template. This will be the body tube of the rocket. Wrap this rectangle around the pencil length-wise and tape the rectangle so that it forms a tube.

Next, carefully cut out the two fin units. Take one fin unit and align the rectangle between the two fins with the end of your body tube. Tape the rectangle to the body tube. Nothing should stick out past the end of the body tube! Do the same thing for the other fin unit. Tape it opposite to the fin that you just placed, so you have a “fin sandwich.”

Next, bend one fin on each fin unit 90 degrees so that each fin is at a right angle to its neighbor. When you look along the back of the rocket, the fins should look like a plus sign.

Next, use the sharpened end of your pencil to twist the top of the body tube into a nose cone. Be sure that the nose cone is completely closed.

Finally, remove the pencil and replace it with a straw or a small tube. Blow into the straw to launch your rocket. If you want, find a yardstick and measure how far you can launch your rocket.

Congratulations, you have made a straw rocket!
