Bella:

Bella, a novice from Italy, learns that workers can decide to stop work.  Everyone stops work and the workers walk out on strike.  This sudden action, which happens on Bella's first day confuses her greatly.  She regains understanding of the situation after her distant cousin Pietro, who has arranged her coming to America, explains what has happened.  That first day at the factory is like a baptism of confusion for Bella.

Explanation:

On the first day that Bella resumes work at the Triangle Factory, workers walk on strike.  For Bella, this situation is unusual and unheard of.   Her distant cousin Pietro enlightens her about the strike.  After surviving the factory fire and proving her indomitable spirit, she marries Rocco with whom they beget two daughters, Yetta and Jane.  From her own life experiences Bella teaches her daughters to be "smart, strong, and useful girls."

Explanation:

Margaret Peterson Haddix's 2007 Uprising teaches young women to be courageous and dogged fighters for justice and equity.

Margaret depicts Bella as a new arrival from Italy, who comes to New York City to seek employment so that she can help her family survive famine back home.  Fortunately, she survives the Triangle Factory fire that has killed many workers, gets married, and bears two daughters, whom she raises live in strength and courage like herself.
