Read the excerpt from “it needs to be done.”

i was sixteen with no car, so i walked all over chicago instead. i walked all around the neighborhoods that hummed with people and cars. up until then, i’d only seen skyscrapers in movies—now they were everywhere! one day on a side street, i noticed two signs. one read "the dream theater" and the other read "volunteers wanted."

something about the signs made me curious, and i ended up back on the same side street the next day.
