Do you think the ideas of americans today on immigrants are different or similar to the ideas expressed on the base of the statue of liberty? if so, how?

The ideas towards immigrants these days in the USA have clearly changed from those expressed on the base of the Statue of Liberty. In the sonnet, The New Colossus, the poem  inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, one can read these famous lines: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Whereas the Statue of liberty advocates for open borders and the welcoming of all immigrants and all peoples, today´s majority in the USA, at least as it is represented by their elected federal governments, both from the Democratic and the Republican parties, advocate for stronger border security and an economic and merit based flow of immigration –forbidding those who don´t meet these standards to be allowed entrance into the USA. Migration has become and economic affair, whereas in the past, it was a humanitarian and humanist issue.

even though there may be variations in human emotions over time, the poem “ a contribution to statistics” by wislawa symborska suggests that the only unchangeable characteristic is mortality.

the author poses a distinction between the approximate and non-approximate numbers which correspond to our need for certainty in life and the difficulty of achieving it. our efforts to measure the exact often fail because the world is not always clearly structured .the poem seems to imply   that the only thing that is certain and has an exact number is death.
