In thyroid problems the radio isotope is used to diagnose the condition by using a camera and the isotope of iodine-131 is used to kill the target cancer cells.

In medicine, nuclear chemistry (radioactive elements) is used to diagnose and identify the diseases. A radioactive material is used as a tracer in which patient swallows the radioactive element and the camera is used to take the images in the organ where radioactive element is targeted.  The diagnosis is done this way. The techniques used are position image tomography and single -photon emission tomography, magnetic resonance sonography and ultrasound. The disease diagnosed are gall bladder disorders, thyroid problems, cancers, dementia and many more.

The use of this diagnostic technique has minimized the process as no surgery is required to diagnose.

In the treatment of thyroid iodine-131 is used. It is a targeted nucleotide therapy which kills the cancer cells in thyroid gland.
