La citocinesis ocurre al final del ciclo celular después de la mitosis o meiosis. En la división de células animales, la citocinesis ocurre cuando un anillo contráctil de microfilamentos forma un surco de escisión que pellizca la membrana celular por la mitad. En las células vegetales, se construye una placa celular que divide la célula en dos.
