While European explorations were mainly for economic reasons, there was also a rush to claim new land, spread religion and personal fame.

Ships and crews were first funded with the promise of finding a new trade route to Asia for trading. The new world was not Asia, but it did offer new economic value with its raw materials, such as gold.  On discovery of the new world Spain, Portugal, England and other nations were also interested in establishing their rule offer these areas by setting up colonies before the other countries could claim them. This was much easier than trying to expand their country through a war with their neighbor. The new world did not have Christianity and many felt it was their duty to do so. Some people wanted to practice their religion more strictly and choose the new world to do this. Being a successful explorer created fame and could allow someone to create a successful life for themselves when they returned.
