In recent years, low and high context communities have had the opportunity to gain more exposure and awareness of each other’s cultures. For example, Deaf people who may have previously had limited to no accessibility for events outside of the Deaf community now have more opportunities to access the wider Deaf culture and things that were before only available to hearing people and vice versa. Consequently, the interactions between the Deaf and hearing communities has begun to change. Discuss how the relationship between the Deaf communities and the hearing world has evolved since the first Deaf school was opened. Highlight factors that have contributed to Deaf culture becoming a larger part of society—or at least more largely known—and briefly explore how this might influence interactions between Deaf and hearing people in the future.
