ALEXANDER, North Dakota. It took less than 48 hours for 18-year-old Evan Jensen to smell the chance to make some money in North Dakota. The high school graduate simply got a whiff of himself and his brother Justin. The two had been sleeping in a pickup while looking for work in the oil fields.

"We smelled," Evan said. "Bad."

Thousands of workers have rushed to the remote part of the American Midwest. They have arrived there with hopes of making a fortune in North Dakota's oil fields. Housing and services haven't kept up with demand. The closest shower to Evan was some 60 miles (about 97 kilometers) away at a truck stop. The showers there were expensive and dirty. The wait for one was several hours long.

That's when the idea for a mobile shower struck Evan.

"A lot of [necessary things are missing] out here," Evan said. "[There's no] place to take a shower and brush your teeth."

Many food trucks and other mobile businesses were already offering services to oil field workers. But Evan believed that the workers would enjoy a hot shower nearly as much as a hot meal.

Evan pitched his idea to his parents. His father decided to help him turn a 53-foot (16.2-meter) truck into a five-stall shower center. They installed clothes washers and dryers. They also put in an office.

Evan paid for the improvements. He had earned $15,000 over the past two years. He had trapped muskrats and sold their fur.

Evan's mobile business is called Better Showers. The business rolled into a campground in the heart of the oil patch in June 2012. The teen charged $10 a shower. He also offered towels and washcloths for $1 apiece. The soap was free. He let customers shower for as long as they wanted.

At least two dozen people stop by every day. Most of them are repeat customers.

Evan worked hard. His venture has done well. He has earned several thousand dollars. Now, he hopes to sell the business. He plans to use the money to pay for college. Evan has already been accepted to McNally Smith College of Music in Minnesota.

Harry Chalmiers is the president of McNally Smith. Chalmiers said that Evan's inventiveness will serve him well in the music business.

"You've got to be…creative," Chalmiers said. "That's always been true for musicians…. Today, it's true for more and more people."

Evan is already busy thinking of more possible businesses.

"I…think of what's in demand," said the teen. "I've got a bunch of ideas. All it takes is guts, really."
