Irony is when something unexpected happens in the story. explain how the ending of "the gift of the magi"is ironic

In the "Gift of the Magi", it revolves around husband and wife, Delilah and Jim, if I remember correctly. The irony was that Delilah cut her hair in order to buy a pocket watch chain for Jim, and Jim sold his pocket watch to buy haircombs for her. The haircombs are now useless considering the fact that Delilah now has short hair and the same goes for the pocket watch chain since Jim sold his pocket watch for her gift.
