Pls me use what you know from your reading and explain how the scopes trial was a reflection of the 1920s cultural clashes and evidence of a changing society.

The Scopes Trial became a bigger trial testing the cultural beliefs of fundamentalism against modernism. Urban and youth cultures were moving more toward a modernist approach believing in more secular and scientific ideology. This side was represented by John Scopes and his testing of the Tennessee Butler Act outlawing the teaching of evolution in public schools. Trial was about whether or not he was guilty--he was and did not deny it--but rather about proving that science was more logical then the fundamentalist movement which had risen at this time. Fundamentalism believes in the literal truth of the Bible and William Jennings Bryan, a known conservative and champion for rural values was the lawyer defending the Bible and the right of Tennesseans to protect their children from a theory about monkeys. The whole trial was broadcast on radio and was the news through its duration. Ultimately, Bryan was humiliated on the stand and Charles Darrow, ACLU lawyer and know atheist, was able to poke holes in religion.
