Generally, most developmental psychologists divide adulthood into three distinct periods: early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood.

Early adulthood can be said to be at the age range of 20-40; middle adulthood occurs in the age range of 40-65, while late adulthood occurs from age 65 onwards.

The psychosocial crisis that occurs at the early adulthood stage is intimacy vs. isolation, while the one at middle adulthood is generativity vs. stagnation. During late adulthood, the psychosocial crisis that occurs is integrity vs. despair.
