What subject a person understand their identity and values?

I believe that religion is the subject which can offer the most insight into a person's sense of identity and values. It is impossible to have an identity or any sense of values without the context of meaning and purpose in which to live. The search for connection to a higher power helps to navigate away from mundane aspects of life toward a greater good.
