The US Constitution and the US Declaration of Independence have many similarities. Each was meant to protect the natural rights and freedoms of Americans, and each was designed to set limits on government. Only the Declaration includes this statement, however: βWe hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.β Read Article I, Section 2 of the Florida Constitution. What similarities do you notice between this wording and that of the Declaration? The US Constitution does not include such a statement. Why do you think this is so? How does the US Constitution respond to the question of basic rights? Why? Why do you think the framers of the Florida Constitution chose to include a declaration of rights in Article I?
