Checks and balances were developed to make sure no one branch was more powerful than the other branches. Here is an example of checks and balances, The president nominates federal officials, but the senate has to confirm the nomination. Here is an example of separation of powers, Congress has the power to create laws. They are different because separation of powers divides the government's powers into three branches.
