At first, the Indians were attacking the English settlers. yet, once they realized that they weren't a threat, they started offering hospitality to the new settlers, making the settlers dependant on the Indians. This had the settlers not grow their own food and would have to trade with the Indians to get certain supplies. John Smith would frequently negotiate for food, and when he failed, he would take his beliefs into account, *he believed that the settlers should treat the Indians how the Spanish did, slavery and usage* and he would take what he wanted by force.

Eventually, the leader of the Powhatan Tribe (Powhatan) realized that the settlers were there to stay and that they were not returning his hospitality. They were not giving him supplies or food like he was to them, and the settlers were not marrying the members of his tribe. This led to a massacre of the people with a scorched earth sort of policy.

Both sides began attacking. Soon, a truce was forced upon them, and so John Rolfe married Pocahontas, Powhatan's favorite daughter.
