Attaching an electronic catalogue card to each document is the simplest means to do searching much easier. Metadata is the data about a certain data. Example of metadata is Dublin core which specify a standard set of needed and approved elements for such catalogue card.

To help this, data is compiled; the documents are given an internal structure. There are many dissimilar formats for structured data, some simple in the description, others rich and complex.

In addition, it can be basic that metadata is data information that delivers information about other data. There are many different types of metadata, comprising descriptive metadata, structural metadata, reference metadata, administrative metadata, and statistical metadata.
