Many sects of Buddhism have developed and the religion has been combined with others.

Buddhism is divided into two main branches: Mahayana and Theravada. These two share certain characteristics but their goals are different. Mahayana searches for enlightenment, whereas Theravada searches for individual liberation and is primarily found in Southeast Asia.
