Why was the indian national congress created? what progress did they make gaining india their independence back?

This congress was made to stand up against the British and how they are unfairly discriminating against Indians. It was, for some time, lead by Gandhi. He resigned though. It gave the Indians hope and allowed them to continue fighting for equal rights.
