There should be options to choose from. I have however managed to find the options elsewhere and the answer is - send a copy of the informed consent via fax to the subject's wife. After she has had the opportunity to speak to the investigator, she can sign the informed consent and fax it back.

Even though the elderly gentleman has given his own consent the wife's consent is still needed in order for the trial to go ahead. She is his legal representative and both consents will be needed in this case as that is how the law works. Once both are obtained as quickly as possible the trial can commence.
