Technically the first known written numerals were created by Egyptians in Middle Kingdom but the Ancient Greeks began a systematic study of mathematics in its own right with Greek mathematics.

1. Most of Greek mathematics was based on geometry. 
2.It was the Greeks who first grappled with the idea of infinity
3. The most important single contribution of the Greeks was the idea of proof, and the deductive method of using logical steps to prove or disprove theorems from initial assumed axioms.
