Because tobacco use is known to cause cancer, heart disease, and other health harms that disproportionately impact African Americans and Hispanics, back in 2011, Dr. Murphy received a grant to address tobacco use on the HT campus. She engaged the help of the HT Student Health Activist Organization [then known as Student Consumer Health Advocates (CHAs) but now known as EPICC] who administered baseline surveys on tobacco use knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors before the HT tobacco-free campus policy intervention and at 12-month follow-up after the HT tobacco-free campus policy intervention to over 300 students, staff, and faculty who volunteered to participate when the CHAs encountered them anywhere on the campus grounds. The results showed that at baseline before the tobacco-free policy intervention the survey found that use of tobacco was low (10%). After the implementation of the tobacco-free campus policy intervention a reduction in tobacco use at the .05 level of significance “on campus” from 10% to 5% was demonstrated. 1.
