why were gender roles important in the 1950s?

Gender roles are societal standards about how men and women should talk, think, behave, and interact with one another. Gender roles define what people can and cannot do in many ways by classifying items like work, entertainment, and objects as masculine or feminine. In the 1950s, for example, it was extremely unlikely that a woman would take a position as a garbage collector because society and culture maintained that it was a man's job and that it was not appropriate for a woman to do so.

Gender roles determine how men and women behave and communicate with one another, and they are one of the most dominant aspects of culture. Men were expected to be the head of the household and the primary provider during the 1950s, while women were expected to be the homemaker who cared for the children.
