Presently, as per the provisions of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976 the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are indirectly elected from amongst the Councillors. Also the Mayor holds only a one-year long term.

The mayor is limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year break.
