B.F Skinner´s experiments led him to the conclusion that children acquire language through operant conditioning, meaning that positive reinforcement when they use language functionally helps them to learn the association between words and their meanings.

Praising a child for babbling sounds similar to a word makes him want to repeat that sound while ignoring a sound he makes leads him to forget it.

Based on his theory, Skinner developed a teaching process for language development based on the reinforcement of correct use of language. For example, a child that after saying the word "apple" receives an apple will understand the connection and internalize that knowledge.
