Social control in general has been found to have positive effects on health behavior while being negatively related to well-being. This study examined differential effects of positive and negative control in the context of smoking cessation. Overall, 100 smokers (28 women, mean age = 40.48) reported daily positive and negative control received from their non-smoking partner, smoking, hiding smoking, reactance and affect for 21 days after their quitdate. Multilevel models show different effects for positive and negative control at the between- as well as the within-person level: While negative control had no effects on smoking and rather detrimental effects on affective outcomes and hiding smoking, positive control was more positive in its effects on behavior and behavioral and affective outcomes. It is positive rather than negative control that seem to have the intended effects on behavior without resulting in emotional costs.
