Why was it important for Nelson Mandela to have both white and black security guards?

Mandela chose to keep some of the white security guard, to the surprise of many, in order to promote unification of all races. The black and white security guards slowly learn how to work together well once they realize how important their job is to keep the President safe from the many people who despise him.
