The central idea has to do with the 95 points that Luther tacked on the Church at Wittenberg. These points all had to do with the role of the clergy and the power of the Church. The Catholic Church wanted to remain the main link between God and man. Luther argued that idea was not only wrong but unnecessary. One of his strongest arguments was against indulgences. These were payments made by people to the church to release their family members from the torments of Purgatory. That made Luther fume.

But Protestantism has many links from the beginning to the present day. One of the most needed was the American Constitution and the first 10 amendments -- better known as the Bill of Rights.
