The colonists believed they have certain rights including freedom of religion, press, and quartering of troops for just a few examples, as well as having the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These can all be found in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.  Some of these rights are a bit limited however, to ensure safety. For example, we can protest, but if we interfere with daily life like get in the way of traffic or cause damage, police have the right to arrest you. :D
