DOCTORAL LEARNING STRATEGIES Doctoral Learning StrategiesDoctoral students may face many learning experiences prior to beginning a doctoral program. Doctoral students come from different backgrounds and not every student is the same.Some students may enter the program after receiving a baccalaureate degree (BSN) and others may enter after achieving a master’s degree (MSN). Therefore, the prior learning experiences of a BSN and an MSN nurse would be different prior to starting the doctoral program.Additionally, the field of nursing practice is diverse and nurses have many varied experiences prior to beginning the DNP program. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the learning experiences one may face prior to the doctoral learning experience, the autonomous nature of doctoral learning, the uniqueness of doctoral programs and learning skills and strategies compared to other learning experiences, the assistance given to students by the “Doctor ofNursing Orientation Webinar” and specific strategies for success in the completion of a doctoral program. Learning Experiences Prior to Doctoral Learning Since there are various pathways and career experiences that doctoral students may encounter prior to entering the program, learning experiences will vary. For example, Fitzpatrick& Donahue (2011) discussed a transition program for hospital nurse leaders that focused on strengthening the ability of leaders to apply evidence-based practice in a hospital setting while considering the challenges that are present in the current healthcare environment. Other nurse leader candidates may have had experiences related too attaining and maintaining magnet status for a facility or may have become involved in local, regional and national organizations and professional committees.
