Why is the Dead Sea so salty and full of minerals?

The dead sea is more briny than seawater and this is because the water in the dead sea evaporates more quickly than open ocean water. Because the water is evaporated large amounts of salt are left behind.

The Dead Sea is fed by the Jordan River, but it has no river that flows away from it and to the sea. Salts and minerals carried into the Dead Sea by the Jordan River become trapped and build up over time. There are several of these types of lakes in the Eastern Mediterranean, and they are often very large.
