Sima Qian lived in 2nd and 1st century BCE. The Records of the Grand Historian starts from the time of Huang Di, the mythical first ruler of all Chinese, reputed to be 2000 years before when Sima Qian started writing. However, his work is meant to be a comprehensive history from the very beginning of the Chinese people to his days.
