Why did the Salem witch trials happen? I never really understood why these terrible things happened.

People thought that they where using magical powers and thus thought that they were witches. Scared that they might use their magic on them, they hanged them. Also known as killing them by choking them to death.

Strange Unexplainable occurrences.

Explanation:

The men of the colonies believed that the women were witches due to strange occurrences happening in their presence. Such as lightning going through a window and the "witch" destroying her bonds and escaping them with ease. They were fooled into thinking that they were magical and slain and/or beheaded them to save their town, unknowingly that they were just murdering women for no reason.
