The first English settlers were motivated by different things. Their motivations caused the colonies in the various regions to develop differently. Read the following quotes from early leaders in Jamestown, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania. Explain how they represent the motives for settlement in each region. Then, give one example of how that motive for settlement affected the early communities in those regions.
