Years before the colony of Georgia was founded, Sir Robert Montgomery came up with a plan to create the Margravate of Azilia which would be on Georgian land and would provide a buffer for South Carolina against the Spanish and French.

He titled his application for the colony to be: "A Discourse concerning the design'd establishment of a New Colony to the South of Carolina, in the most delightful country of the Universe. By Sir Robert Mountgomry, Baronet."

The colony didn't come to fruition until 17 years later when  James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia to help the poor of England with a new start at life.
