The contributing factors that may lead to an increase of learners abusing substances in school are; Peer pressure, Depression, Family issues, bad parental upbringing

Peer pressure: Many learners may attempt to abuse substances just because their friend is doing the same. They do this to try to fit in and feel belonged. Some of these learners believe that, if they do not join in such activity, they will not be respected by their peers.Depression: Some Learners may just have a lot of personal stuffs to deal with, they may be going through some emotional and psychological issues and the only thing they find comforting is substance abuse, this, we all know may not be the solution to their problem.Family Issues: Some learners may be going through emotional discomfort because of issues that arise from home, this could be domestic violence on either parents, divorce, financial problems etc.Parental Upbringing: Some parents don't pay much attention to their growing wards especially in their formative years where they need lots of guidance, this could arise from busy work schedule of the parents or just, ignorance.

In such an impressionable age, the approval of friends and peers is fundamental for the child, so a group of peers with a tendency to substances abuse can be a bad influence.

Emotional stress is also a contributing factor, as many students use drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms and become addicted.
