What is the Zimmerman telegram

It is a secret diplomatic not from the German Administration to Mexico in January 1917. It proposed a military alliance with Germany and Mexico and stated that if the U.S were to enter WWI, Germany would aide Mexico in gaining back Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. It was decoded and intercepted by the British.
