The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to naturalized people or those born in the U.S.

Explanation: The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868. It granted citizenship to everybody born in the United states including freed slaves or those naturalized. It also prevented all states from denying anyone of this right.

The amendment was in reaction to the relaxed attitude towards the 13th amendment which put an end to slavery . The Congress saw a need to establish a strong foundation to put this new law into effect. This was done through the ratification of the 14th Amendment.

Challenges: Forms of discrimination continued such as segregation and courts ruled that this was not against the 14th amendment.  Also, the 14th Amendment was not seen as applicable on the National level.

It transformed American Society by setting the platform for such victories in the civil rights movement such as the Brown v. Board of Education which put an end to segregation in schools, and cases relating to interracial marriage.
