A 5 foot long 2 inch schedule 80 pipe made from cold drawn carbon steel (use plain carbon steel data) was designed to carr a fluid at 1000 PSI between to reservoirs. Unfortunately, the pipe was manufactured 1/16th of an inch too long but was jammed in between the space on a cold day. The pipe was installed at 10°F but must be operable at 110°F. Find the factor of safety using the Ductile Coulomb-Mohr (DCM) theory and then using the Goodman Failure theory. Assume the pipe has no sensitivity to notches. If the pipe has the load applied every half hour, how many hours can the pipe operate under these circumstances?
